Dating back to the end of the Second Seminole War, the city of Longwood is one of the oldest in Central Florida. In the early 19th century, several forts were built in the area and Seminole County went through several periods of great military importance. Once the Indian threat diminished, Russian Czarist P.A. Demens opened a lumber mill in Longwood and brought the railroad through the fledgling community. Enticed by the talk of warm weather year-round, settlers soon moved into Longwood and established it as an agricultural leader known for orange groves and other crops. Many of the early buildings still exist today in downtown Longwood, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fueled by both the space industry and the creation of Walt Disney World, new economic and development opportunities presented themselves to the city of Longwood and Seminole County.
